Zakat questions

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is an annual payment of 2.5% of qualifying wealth, given to people who are eligible to receive it.

What is the nisab?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must have, held for one lunar year, before Zakat is due. It is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.

Should I use the gold or silver nisab?

Scholars differ. The silver nisab is lower, so more people pay Zakat and more people in need benefit. The gold nisab is higher. If you are unsure, ask a qualified scholar.

Do I pay Zakat on my home or car?

Most scholars agree that items for personal use, such as your home, car, furniture and clothes, are not zakatable. Property or goods held for sale or investment usually are.

When should I pay Zakat?

Zakat is due once your wealth has stayed above the nisab for one full lunar year. Many people pay during Ramadan, but you can pay at any time once it is due.

Is my Zakat tax-deductible?

Act of Goodwill, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so Zakat given through us is a tax-deductible charitable donation to the extent allowed by law. You will receive a receipt.

Can I give my Zakat to Act of Goodwill?

Yes. Choose Zakat on the donation form, or use the button in the calculator. See "How we handle your Zakat" on this page.
